Capel factsheet

Location

  • The proposed site is at the Clockhouse Quarry in Capel, Surrey. The EfW facility will be built next to the SITA UK landfill site.
  • Access to the plant will be by the same route as the current access to the landfill site.

Dimensions

  • 110,000 tonnes per annum capacity one stream EfW plant.
  • 132.8m long and 67.64m wide, equating to 8,982.6 m².
  • The total height of the building including the stack will stand at 70m high.

Construction

  • To begin spring 2009, subject to planning consent.
  • Construction and commissioning will take around three years.
  • Becoming operational in 2011/2012.
  • Search for technology and construction providers began in spring 2007.
  • Design and build costs estimated to be over £60m.

Staffing

  • Approximately 40 staff will be employed at the facility once it is up and running.

Waste footprint

  • The waste for the plant will come from the Epsom and Guildford waste transfer stations. These transfer stations accept waste from seven of the 11 district councils in Surrey, including the area where the proposed plant is to be located. It is expected that the majority of the waste will come from the Epsom transfer station.

Typical waste

  • The plant will receive materials that cannot be sensibly recycled (around 40% of household waste generated in Surrey).
  • Residues left over from the EfW process, such as ash and metals, will be taken away to be recycled or landfilled.

Power

  • 8MW of electricity will be recovered from the waste and fed into the National Grid
  • This will be enough to power 8,000 homes.
