Welcome to the Trumps Farm energy-from-waste mini site. On these pages you can find out more about Surrey Waste Management's planning application to Surrey County Council to build an energy-from-waste facility on land adjacent to Trumps Farm, Longcross near Chertsey.

Background to the application:

Surrey Waste Management submitted a planning application for the Trumps Farm site at Longcross in June 2008. The application is to build an energy-from-waste (EfW) plant to treat residual household waste generated in Surrey that could not be sensibly recycled or composted.

The requirement for two energy-from-waste facilities in the county was identified in the Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy (JMWMS) adopted by Surrey County Council and the eleven other district and borough councils in 2006. The JMWMS sets out an integrated waste management strategy which is led by the waste hierarchy which places an emphasis on minimising the amount of waste produced, then recycling and composting as much as possible and then recovering further value from the remainder.

A waste plan for Surrey has been developed to identify suitable sites for building a range of facilities to manage the waste generated in the county. It aims to deliver more sustainable development by:

  • The objective of the plan is to reduce the quantity of waste we all produce, recycle as much as we can and recover energy from waste that cannot sensibly be recycled.
  • Treating waste as a resource.
  • Identifying and providing a network of household waste management infrastructure including energy-from-waste facilities.

The Surrey Waste Plan also sets ambitious recycling and composting targets, as well as the recovery of energy from the leftover 270,000 tonne annual household waste stream. It sets out the policies against which any planning application for waste facilities in Surrey will be assessed by the county's Planning and Regulatory Committee in deciding whether to grant planning permission.
