Welcome to our virtual exhibition for the proposed energy-from-waste (EfW) facility at Trumps Farm, Surrey. Here you will find information on all aspects of the proposed facility, from waste hierarchy, timescales and landscape impact, to why Trumps Farm was chosen.

Trumps Farm Energy from Waste Facility

Recovering energy from Surrey's residual household waste

The proposal

Surrey Waste Management will be submitting a planning application to Surrey County Council in the next few months for an energy-from-waste (EfW) facility at Trumps Farm, Longcross. The background to Surrey's strategy for managing waste and the details of the proposal are set out at this exhibition.

National waste strategy

Traditionally the UK has had a high dependence on landfilling waste. However, the 1999 EU Landfill Directive introduced a shift away from landfill to reduce the environmental impact and to help to meet climate change objectives.

To meet the Directive's obligations, the Government produced a national Waste Strategy for England in 2007. This strategy outlines the Government's preferred approach to managing waste, where the emphasis is on minimising waste, recycling and composting at least 50% of household waste by 2020. The Government has also set a target for recovering value from 75% of residual household waste that cannot sensibly be recycled by 2020. One way this can be achieved is by generating electricity via an EfW facility from the energy contained in waste that would otherwise go to landfill.
