![]() Surrey's vision for wasteSurrey County Council - the waste disposal authority (WDA) for the county - is responsible for disposing of all the household waste collected in Surrey. The WDA supports energy-from-waste as its preferred method of managing the residual waste that remains after recycling and composting. The decision to support EfW came after extensive research into a wide range of alternative treatment technologies and consultation with all 11 of Surrey's Borough and District Councils. The result of this consultation is the Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy for Surrey (JMWMS), adopted in 2006, (see www.surreycc.gov.uk) which provides a 20 year strategy for managing waste in the county and identifies the need to provide two EfW facilities in Surrey.

The WDA continues to review waste disposal options and is currently investigating alternatives for composting waste. A waste plan for Surrey has been developed which sets out how the aims of the strategy will be achieved. The objective of the plan is to reduce the quantity of waste we all produce, recycle as much as we can and recover energy from waste that cannot sensibly be recycled. This means we need to view waste as a valuable resource and to provide a network of waste management facilities. Following a public examination in 2007 into the draft Surrey Waste Plan, the independent Planning Inspectorate confirmed Trumps Farm as an appropriate location for a thermal treatment facility. An application has been submitted for an EfW plant at Clockhouse Brickworks, Capel. |
