CHILDREN GO GREEN AT FARNHAM LIBRARY WITH SURREY WASTE MANAGEMENT - 01/09/2009

CHILDREN GO GREEN AT FARNHAM LIBRARY WITH SURREY WASTE MANAGEMENT

Children attending a drop in holiday session at Farnham Library spent a morning learning how to go green.

The session was held by Kate Marsh and Toni Waters, from Surrey Waste Management’s (SWM) waste minimisation team as part of their new summer holiday activity scheme, on 20 August.

The team advise and encourage Surrey residents on how to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste so that as little as possible ends up in landfill. They do this through a variety of free fun and informative methods at schools, community events and at SWM’s community recycling centres.

Youngsters attending the event at the library in West Street were taught the benefits of reducing, reusing and recycling their waste through a number of activities. These included using a special machine to roll unwanted newspaper into sticks which were used to make models and then decorated with colourful paper and glitter

Children also coloured in specially-designed images focusing on composting and recycling, to take home to their parents to reinforce the three Rs message of reducing, reusing and recycling.

Kate Marsh, waste minimisation advisor, said that the aim of the morning was to teach children how to help the environment.

“Our education programme doesn't end in the classroom, and neither does finding out about the impact we all have on the environment,” she said. “We want to show kids of all ages that reducing, reusing and recycling can be fun and great for the environment at the same time.

The children got stuck into activities designed to reinforce the message that simple steps can make a big difference.”
