MARTYRS LANE COMMUNITY RECYCLING CENTRE TO TEMPORARILY CLOSE FOR REDEVELOPMENT - 29/06/2010

Martyrs Lane Community Recycling Centre (CRC) in Woking is to temporarily close to allow for redevelopment.

The development will take place from July to December 2010. The Woking site will be closed to the public from 12 July for approximately 22 weeks while construction takes place. During the closure period residents who use the Martyrs Lane facility will be asked to use the facilities at Lyne Lane CRC in Chertsey, which is 4.5 miles away and Slyfield CRC in Moorfield Road, Guildford, which is 6.9 miles away.

To assist Martyrs Lane users, both Slyfield and Lyne Lane will have extended opening hours of 8am-7.30pm seven days a week until 30 September. After this, they will open from 8am-4.15pm, Monday to Friday and 9am-4.15pm at weekends.

The site is being redeveloped to provide Woking residents with a modern, accessible and user-friendly facility. This is part of Surrey County Council’s county-wide investment programme in waste minimisation, recycling and disposal, supporting its aim of becoming a world leader in dealing with waste.

The improvements will include:

  • A new split-level design to enable easy access to the recycling containers, eliminating the need for steps;

  • Separate entrances for the public and HGVs to help alleviate queuing;

  • Additional parking will also be created, increasing the number of spaces from 20 to 45;

Beverly Sheridan, project manager at Surrey Waste Management, which operates the sites on behalf of Surrey County Council, said: “We are redeveloping Martyrs Lane CRC to provide Woking residents with a modern, easy to use facility. This redevelopment should help to alleviate queuing times for customers and I would like to thank users of the recycling centre for their patience while the site is temporarily closed whilst redevelopment work is carried out.”

Signs giving pre-warning of the closure will be displayed during the next couple of weeks around the site and leaflets providing details of the alternative sites will be available from site staff.
